Driver of stolen car crashes while fleeing traffic stop, then eludes police dogs near Lakemoor

Authorities are searching for a man who eluded a Lake County Sheriff’s deputy in a stolen vehicle and then disappeared a second time after crashing the vehicle and eluding four police dogs who tracked him near Lakemoor late Tuesday night.

The incident began when a Lake County Sheriff’s deputy on patrol around 10 p.m. near west Sullivan Road and Four Seasons Boulevard saw a 2013 Nissan Altima in the area, according to Christopher Covelli, spokesman for the sheriff’s office.

According to Covelli, the vehicle had been reported stolen from a home in Volo on Sept. 5, and when the deputy attempted a traffic stop, the vehicle drove off. Covelli added that the suspect’s driving “was reckless as he went through a neighborhood,” and because of the safety risk involved, the chase was called off.

The deputy continued on patrol, and as he approached the intersection of Route 12 and Molidor Road, he discovered a traffic crash where the Nissan apparently disobeyed a traffic signal and crashed into a northbound 2014 Kenworth semi-tractor trailer truck, Covelli said.
