Police departments and emergency responders all across Florida have been working tirelessly to help those in need after Hurricane Irma blasted down on the entire state. In an uplifting moment amongst the devastation, the Fort Lauderdale Police Department photographed one of its own officers napping with his K-9 counterpart.
Officer Kenneth Somma is seen lying on a cot, holding the paw of his K-9 partner, Eddie, as they both nap. The candid moment between the two partners couldn’t be sweeter.

The Fort Lauderdale Police Department shared the photo on their social media platforms with the caption, “#WeAreInThisTogether #HurricaneIrma.” It’s a nice reminder for anyone affected by this storm that there are people — and animals — out there working hard to keep you safe.
Florida Governor Rick Scott spoke to Today about the efforts the state is taking to help get water and food to those people in shelters. “Everybody’s working their tail off,” he told Today.
They’re certainly putting in the hours, so it’s no wonder this police officer and his pup needed to catch some shut eye.
But making sure the people are safe isn’t the only thing the Fort Lauderdale Police Department has to deal with at the moment. The department also had to send a message to people about looting, which was a real concern during the storm and in the days immediately after.
“Going to prison over a pair of sneakers is a fairly bad life choice,” Police Chief Rick Maglione said in a statement. “Stay home and look after your loved ones and be thankful they are all safe.”
And who’s working to enforce this? None other than the local police department, of course.
“The police stayed behind, and I think we had a unified message down here that this isn’t going to be an opportunity for folks to take advantage of a crisis,” according to Maglione.
There have also been reports of “wildlife displacement” in south Florida, meaning snakes and alligators are finding their way to areas they usually wouldn’t go. An alligator was caught roaming the city streets on video and posted to Twitter, as you can see below.

With all this going on, there’s no doubt Officer Somma and Eddie need some shut eye. Here’s to hoping they stay safe and sound in their efforts to help others!
