Marietta K-9 dogs have graduated and are now sworn cops (with badges)

Marietta’s three newest police officers are very good boys.

The department’s announced Friday that its entire K-9 unit — Atos, Apex and Jacquo — have graduated from their final tier of training, apprehending suspects.

The three Belgian Malinois dogs are now officially sworn officers, with badges and everything.

“They have earned them,” said Chief Dan Flynn.

The dogs been doing police work, like in April when cops said Apex sniffed out 14.5 grams of wrapped methamphetamine and 11 bundles of heroin.

But now they can run down suspects and take them down before their handler gives them a command to let go, said agency spokesman Officer Chuck McPhilamy. That’s among the toughest things to train a K-9 dog to do.

McPhilamy said the dogs are certified through the National Narcotic Dog Detector Association and the North American Police Work Dog Association.

Atos was born in the former Central European sovereign state of Czechoslovakia, Apex was born in America and Jacquo was born in France.
