Stolen car crashes while fleeing traffic stop, and driver eludes police dogs near Lakemoor

Authorities are searching for a man in a stolen vehicle who eluded a Lake County sheriff’s deputy and then disappeared a second time after crashing the vehicle and eluding four police dogs who tracked him near Lakemoor late Tuesday.

The incident began when a deputy on patrol around 10 p.m. near West Sullivan Road and Four Seasons Boulevard saw a 2013 Nissan Altima in the area, according to Christopher Covelli, spokesman for the sheriff’s office.

According to Covelli, the vehicle had been reported stolen from a home in Volo on Sept. 5, and when the deputy attempted a traffic stop, the vehicle drove off. Covelli added that the suspect’s driving “was reckless as he went through a neighborhood,” and because of the safety risk involved, the chase was called off.

The deputy continued on patrol, and as he approached Route 12 and Molidor Road, he discovered a traffic crash where the Nissan apparently disobeyed a traffic signal and crashed into a northbound 2014 Kenworth semi-tractor trailer truck, Covelli said.
