Stratford K-9 Hex turns 3

STRATFORD — One of Stratford’s finest celebrated his third birthday Monday.

K-9 Hex turned 3 and celebrated by enjoying a cake from H3 Pet Supply of Stratford. Hex’s handler is Stratford Police Officer Jose Dias.

The duo is the first K-9 team in Connecticut to be certified by the International Police Work Dog Association — the highest title a certified patrol K-9 unit can receive.

Hex is a German Shepherd. Like most police dogs in the U.S., Hex is from Eastern Europe. He was born in Slovokia. Dias and Hex underwent six months of training in Pennsylvania before officially joining the ranks in Stratford in 2017.

Dias and Hex work the day shift, according to the Stratford police website. The midnight shift is staffed by Officer Ashley Vaughn and K-9 Rebel and the evening shift is staffed by Officer Stephen Santoro and K-9 Logan.

All three K-9 units attended a meet and greet at Riverview Bistro in Stratford on Sept. 1, 2017.

Donations to the K-9 unit are always appreciated, officials said. Checks can be made out to Stratford Police K-9 Fund.
